With the arrival of summer, the owners of homestead plots and cottages think about how to put their lawn in order – an important component of landscape design. And the best solution is to buy a lawn mower. However, making the right choice with all the variety of models and brands is not so easy. In our review, we will talk about how to choose a lawnmower, based on your individual needs, and give a rating of lawn mowers in three different categories of this garden equipment.

Mower Guide

What parameters to look for when choosing a gasoline mower:

Consider the terrain relief

If your terrain is hilly, uneven or sloping, you should pay attention to self-propelled models with a large wheel diameter.

Land area:

The stove area of the lawn up to 3 hectares will fit the smallest lawn mower (cutting width up to 37 cm); for an area of 5-7 acres, a lawn mower with a mowing width of 45 cm or more will do; for a lawn area of more than 10 acres, the capture should be at least 50 cm; Well, for lawns of 20 acres, it is worth thinking about purchasing a … garden tractor 🙂

Engine power:

It would seem that the more powerful the engine, the better. But there is one nuance:

If a foreign solid object gets under the knife, be it a stone or a bone, for example, a motor with an average engine power often stalls a lawn mower, you remove the object and mow further, and a lawn mower with the most powerful motor (with the same mowing width) the engine tries to crank it up, as a result of which all sorts of troubles occur: a curved shaft, a bent knife, splinters fly away …. our appearance in service is guaranteed!

Summary: it is better not to buy the option with a super powerful engine. It is better to take the average or slightly above the average of the proposed line. For example, for mowers with a width of 51-53 cm, engines that are more powerful than 6-6.5 horsepower are not recommended. Better yet, try to inspect the lawn before mowing for the presence of foreign objects.

Collector Type:

Collectors can be of two types:

  • Soft (from a flexible grid) – with this it is more convenient to monitor its filling .. But if there are drops of dew on the grass, it will stick to the walls of the grass collector and will not allow it to fill up to the end. Gradually, small particles of grass clog the net so much that it is simply impossible to do a thorough washing and vacuuming.
  • Plastic (as a plastic box) – it is more difficult to control the filling, plastic collapses with time, but it is definitely more convenient to work with them in wet weather and they wash well.

Side ejection:

The function is very convenient for mowing roadsides and similar places. By the way, it practically does not increase the cost of mowers.

Wheel size:

Virtually no effect on mower quality. It is inconvenient to drive over small bumps with small wheels, but there should be no bumps on the lawn.

Drive unit:

Also an amateur. Front-wheel drive facilitates handling: with a slight pressure on the handles, the wheels are raised. Allows you to turn on the spot, without turning off the engine. Rear-wheel drive provides quick movement when mowing, the wheels barely slip, but for a quick turnaround you have to turn off the drive of the wheels.

From all of the above, it follows that the landscape gardening machinery working on internal combustion engines is universal, unpretentious, productive and reliable, has a much greater resource of continuous operation.

No wonder professional lawn mowers are made only on the basis of the engine. At the same time, you simply may not need all these qualities when it comes to a small, well-groomed site. Another issue is the functionality of this garden equipment, because this characteristic is often associated with power.
